Our Story

Cube Hydro Partners, LLC (“Cube Hydro”) is a portfolio company of I Squared Capital, LLC (“ISQ”), a global management company specializing in long-term infrastructure investments. Cube Hydro is a hydropower development and operating platform targeting small and mid-size greenfield and brownfield hydropower opportunities predominantly in North America.

Cube Hydro was originally founded as Enduring Hydro, LLC (“EH” or “Enduring Hydro”) by Dr. Kristina M. Johnson in 2011, as an energy consulting firm. The firm focused on assisting hydroelectric power plant owners to use newly authorized energy tax incentives and grants, such as the Department of Treasury’s Section 1603 Program, in lieu of tax credits. EH consulted for various parties including Duke Energy, Alcoa, Rochester Gas & Electric, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company, returning over $150 million in tax-free cash to clients.

In 2012, EH evolved its strategy from consulting to direct investment and acquisition of hydropower assets. In line with EH’s new focus on buying, upgrading, and building hydroelectric assets in North America, the company acquired the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license for the 6-MW Mahoning Creek Hydroelectric Project in July 2012. Thanks to a strong public-private partnership between Enduring Hydro, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the FERC, the project was completed within a year and commissioned on December 26, 2013.

To enable further acquisitions and portfolio growth, Enduring Hydro entered into a joint venture partnership with ISQ to form Cube Hydro in January 2014. By combining the hydro expertise of EH with the financial expertise of ISQ, Cube Hydro has expanded its operations and now owns and operates 13 hydropower facilities primarily in the Mid-Atlantic region.
